Acupuncture is the practice of painlessly inserting hair-thin needles into acu-points on the body for therapeutic benefit.  It has been safely employed for almost 3000 years as a means to effectively treat a wide variety of health concerns. For members who do not like the idea of needles, ask about “acutonics” which uses tuning forks to stimulate your body’s natural vibrations to achieve enhanced health outcomes. Free for Positive Living BC members.

Your Community Health Fund (CHF) helps reduce the burden of health-related expenses associated with HIV that are not covered by BC Medical Services Plan or other sources. CHF cheques are issued each Thursday and available for pick-up at the reception desk at 803 E. Hastings Street, Vancouver or sign up for Direct Deposit to get your money directly into your bank account.

Reimbursement is available up to $25 per month for eligible Positive Living BC members. Contact the CHF Team Monday to Friday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm by emailing chfteam@positivelivingbc.org or phone 604-893-2245.

Complementary dental services are provided by fourth-year UBC dental-hygiene students and supervised by a registered dental hygienist. Students will clean teeth (scaling), examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care such as fluoride treatments. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral health. Free for Positive Living BC members.

Massage therapists work with a wide variety of patients in the treatment of illness, injury rehabilitation and disabilities to help improve joint mobility, circulation and, lymphatic drainage and to reduce or eliminate muscle tension and pain. There is a wide variety of research published in peer-reviewed journals proving the benefits of massage therapy for various conditions. Free for Positive Living BC members.

Naturopathic medicine aims to stimulate your body’s natural healing power to treat the root causes of illness. Naturopathy improves the quality of life for those with serious and life threatening illnesses. Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet, hands and ears. These areas correspond to organs and systems of the body and benefit the health of these systems. Your immune system acts as a “body guard” to protect you from anything that interferes with your wellness. With HIV, the “body guard” needs additional support – it is very important to always receive a full session of reflexology, with a strong focus on the reflex points associated with immunity. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Positive Living BC Reiki Master will channel your Qi (Chi) or “life force energy”. When your Qi is low, you are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Studies have shown the effectiveness of Reiki treatments on health outcomes for persons living with HIV and on those with a history of substance abuse. Free for Positive Living BC members.

Regular practice of Taoist Tai Chi can bring a wide range of health benefits to the muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems. The flowing movements serve as a moving meditation that reduces stress and provide a way to cultivate body and mind. 12-week sessions start in May, September and January. Thai Yoga Massage puts you in a series of yoga postures while the practitioner uses massage to palm and thumb along your body’s energy lines and pressure points; this relieves muscular tension, improves circulation, boosts your immune system and balances your body energetically. Therapeutic Touch (TT) is administered with the intent to enable you to re-pattern your energy toward wholeness and health. Research has shown the effectiveness of TT to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, improve your pain response, boost your immune system and facilitate your body’s natural restorative processes.
